“My name is Choice Gilbert. My mom (Angeline Kanyongo) suffered a stroke in June of 2015 which left her partially disabled. After the stroke, I brought mom into my home to keep an eye on and help her recover. She requires assistance with all physical tasks. I have hired an aide to assist, but there are still challenges. Due to my other responsibilities of running a business and raising teenagers, it has been difficult. But we are making it work.
“One day I had a moment when I realized that my mom could have been in a nursing home or a facility where she wouldn’t be comfortable enough to do what she chooses to do. I realized that my mom is content because I’m in a position to provide care for her in my own home. However, it also hit me that due to life struggles, most families aren’t in a position to look after their loved one at home. I asked myself this question, ‘What would I have wanted for my mom if I weren’t in a position to care for her myself, in my home?’ The answer was simple:
I would have wanted my mother in a private, assisted living situation. A place where there are at most 5 or 6 residents in the home. Because ensuring the quality of care she deserves would bring peace during a hard time. This is my motivation to say ‘Let me help families in need’. If I want the best for my mom, I would imagine there are others thinking the same thing.
